Celebrating 25 years

It has been 25 years since a group of people, including Jane Brown, launched the Acorn Centre as a way of supporting men and women in the local area with pregnancy-related concerns. The opening of the Centre was first supported by the Sycamore Tree Trust.

The Centre has changed a lot in the last 25 years – but one thing has remained a constant. Jane's dedication, supported by a fantastic team of volunteers, has ensured people who have faced such a trauma in their lives have someone and somewhere to go to discuss their concerns.

In the last 25 years the Centre has supported more than 8,000 men and women, helping them to find a way to manage through the devastation of baby loss, the struggle and grief of infertility, the challenges of terminations as well as the torment of post-natal depression.

This support hasn't always been for those who have 'just' experienced a trauma either. We have seen hundreds of people who years later in their lives need to come to terms with a tragedy that happened when they were younger and that was perhaps never acknowledged at the time.

We are the only centre in the local area that specialises in this type of support. And despite funding difficulties we are determined to keep going for the next 25 years and beyond.

One in four of us experiences a miscarriage. One in seven couples struggle with infertility. One in 10 of us experiences post natal depression. We all know someone in our family and friendship circles that has had to cope with one or more of these issues in their lives.

Our vision is a world where the pain of all baby loss, post natal depression and infertility is recognised. Our mission as we move forward is to ensure more healthcare professionals are equipped with the skills to recognise this need and that we continue to offer that specialist support to people when they need it most.

We can't do this without your support though. As we step out bravely into the next quarter of a century we are launching a £25,000 appeal to enable us to develop a training centre and to provide an improved level of service for counselling.

While the trustees will be targeting grants – fundraising is also key to helping us reach our goals. Please look out for events and activities we will be hosting in 2020 and come along to support!

We would also love to help you with a fundraising event for the Centre too. Let us know if you would like to do something to help boost our funds.

But most of all – please spread the word. The more people who know about our small but vital centre, the better. The more people who know we exist means the more people we can help. We do not want anyone to suffer in silence. At the heart of what we do is helping women and men have somewhere confidential to talk and share their pain during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

We are hear to listen and you are not alone.
